The term holistic AGI appears to refer to a “top-down” approach, see Top-down and bottom-up design. In other words, the supposition is that overall design cannot emerge from disparate parts; rather, the parts must be purpose-built to suit the design objectives.
According to Google Scholar, Ben Goertzel first used this term in his 2005 paper, “A comparison of the Novamente AI design with the human mind-brain”:
- Currently there is a “Cognitive Cyc” project underway within Cycorp, whose aim is to move Cyc development in more of a holistic-AGI direction based on their existing knowledge base and reasoning engine.
And then again in 2006/2007, “Advances in Artificial General Intelligence: Concepts, Architectures and Algorithms : Proceedings of the AGI Workshop 2006”:
- In our view, the only kind of approach to AGI likely to meet with success is one in which the systematic coordinated behavior of a holistic AGI system is carefully envisioned prior to the detailed implementation and testing of the system. I.e., I suggest that the parts of an AGI system must be designed, in detail, with a specific view toward causing the whole to behave appropriately.
