Notes:
The references below discuss the use of virtual humans or embodied conversational agents (ECAs) in dialog systems. ECAs have been developed to address issues of scalability and language independence in traditional dialog systems and can be used in a variety of applications, including negotiation and language learning. The text also mentions the use of deep neural networks and large amounts of multi-domain textual data in the development of domain-specific and domain-agnostic dialog systems. Additionally, the text discusses the use of ECAs in research on social and interactional issues and the potential of socially assistive robots in assisting people with various tasks. ECAs have also been used in the study of posttraumatic stress disorder and have been implemented in automated dialog systems and virtual human toolkits.
Domain-specific dialog systems are designed to handle conversations within a particular subject area or domain. These systems are usually trained on large amounts of data related to the specific domain, and they are designed to handle conversations related to that domain. For example, a domain-specific dialog system for a customer service chatbot might be trained on customer service related data and be able to handle conversations about product returns, billing inquiries, and other topics related to customer service.
On the other hand, domain-agnostic dialog systems are not tied to any particular subject area or domain. These systems are designed to handle conversations on a wide range of topics and can be trained on a variety of data sources. They are typically more flexible and can handle a wider range of conversations than domain-specific systems. However, they may not perform as well on specific domains as a domain-specific system that has been specifically trained for that domain.
Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) and virtual humans are similar in that they both involve the use of computer-generated characters that can interact with users through natural language communication. ECAs are software programs that are designed to engage users in conversation, typically through text or speech, in order to perform a specific task or provide information. Virtual humans are more realistic, 3D representations of humans that can engage users in conversation and other interactive activities, such as virtual reality simulations or online games.
ECAs are typically designed to be domain-specific, meaning that they are trained to handle specific types of tasks or conversations within a limited domain. For example, an ECA might be designed to assist users with booking a hotel room, ordering food online, or scheduling a meeting. In contrast, domain-agnostic dialog systems are designed to handle a wide range of topics and tasks and can adapt to new situations more easily.
Virtual humans, on the other hand, are often designed to be more flexible and multi-purpose, able to engage users in a variety of conversations and activities. They may be used in training simulations, customer service environments, or entertainment applications, among others. While ECAs are typically designed to assist users with specific tasks or provide information, virtual humans are more focused on providing a realistic and immersive social interaction experience.
