The Evolution of Text Summarization and Chatbots from Rule-Based Systems to Transformer Integration

Before 2018, text summarization and chatbot systems were primarily driven by statistical and rule-based approaches, later evolving into early neural models. Chatbots relied heavily on retrieval-based techniques or handcrafted templates, while summarization used extractive methods like sentence ranking, lexical chaining, and rhetorical structures. Neural sequence-to-sequence models were applied to both summarization and chatbot response generation, but they often suffered from generic or repetitive outputs, as noted in studies highlighting the “dull response” problem. Evaluation was also constrained, with metrics like ROUGE and BLEU borrowed from machine translation and not well adapted to dialogue quality. Overall, both fields were constrained by limited contextual understanding and shallow language representations.

During 2018–2019, the landscape shifted dramatically with the introduction of deep contextual embeddings and pretrained transformers. ELMo (2018) brought contextual word embeddings, while GPT and especially BERT (2018) provided powerful pretrained language representations that could be fine-tuned for tasks like summarization and dialogue generation. For chatbots, this period saw an explosion of generative architectures, such as sequence-to-sequence with attention and reinforcement learning refinements, often benchmarked against summarization-style evaluation metrics. Research connected summarization and chatbots more directly: summarization methods were used to condense dialogues, and datasets like SAMSum (2019) explicitly framed conversational summarization as an abstractive summarization task with pretrained GPT-2 embeddings. Fine-tuning of large models allowed chatbots to move from retrieval-based systems toward generative, context-aware dialogue, and summarization benefited from transfer learning, with BERT and GPT variants applied directly to headline generation and dialogue summarization. This was the first period where summarization and chatbot technologies converged on shared transformer backbones.

After 2019, the release of GPT-2 and subsequent large-scale pretrained models accelerated integration. Chatbots began to adopt summarization as a core capability for dialogue management, condensing multi-turn exchanges into context windows manageable by large models. Research on empathetic and domain-specific chatbots leveraged summarization techniques to distill user intent and maintain coherence across conversations. Summarization itself shifted toward abstractive methods driven by transformers, with fine-tuning on dialogue corpora making chatbots more contextually aware and responsive. The relationship between the two domains deepened: summarization became not only a standalone task but also a support mechanism for scalable dialogue, while chatbots provided new corpora and contexts for advancing summarization research. Post-2019, large generative transformers blurred the boundaries, with models like GPT-2, GPT-3, and later DialogPT integrating both summarization and open-domain conversational capabilities into unified systems.
