Notes:

Information retrieval is the process of identifying and extracting relevant information from a large collection of data. It is commonly used in the field of natural language processing, where it can be used to identify and extract specific pieces of information from large collections of text.

In the context of dialog systems, information retrieval can be used to enable the system to understand and respond to user queries.
