Notes:
Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) is a theory of text organization that was developed in the 1980s by Mann and Thompson. It proposes that texts, including written and spoken texts, can be analyzed and understood in terms of the relationships between their different parts and the rhetorical structure that they form.
RST is based on the idea that texts can be decomposed into elementary units called “units of discourse” or “EDUs,” which are units of meaning that convey a single, coherent idea. These EDUs can be organized into a hierarchical structure, with some EDUs serving as subordinates to others. The relationships between EDUs are referred to as “rhetorical relations,” and they can include contrast, elaboration, evidence, or other types of relationships.
In the context of dialog systems, RST can be used to analyze and understand the structure and meaning of dialogues or conversations. For example, RST can be used to identify the main points and supporting details in a conversation, or to identify the relationships between different turns in the conversation. This can be useful for tasks such as dialogue summarization, dialogue act classification, or automated dialogue generation. RST can also be used to improve the performance of natural language processing (NLP) systems by providing a framework for analyzing and understanding the structure and meaning of text.
