Notes:
This text discusses the concept of virtual beings and the role they play in our lives. It mentions that while we may explore and interact with virtual worlds and avatars, our physical bodies and mortality remain the ultimate horizon of our existence. The text also discusses the idea of virtual beings as attractors in mathematics, and how they serve as a shape towards which lines and points tend. It mentions that virtual beings are present in various forms of media, such as videogames, performances, and immersive realities, and discusses the ability to manipulate and personalize one’s virtual identity.
In mathematics, an attractor is a mathematical object that attracts nearby points or lines in a particular way. Specifically, points or lines that are close to the attractor will tend to move closer to it over time, but will never actually reach it. Instead, they will continue to approach it in an endless fashion.
The concept of virtual beings as attractors in mathematics is used as a metaphor to describe how virtual beings can be thought of as a “shape towards which lines and points tend.” In this context, the “lines and points” could represent individuals or groups of people, and the “shape” could represent the virtual being or avatar. Just as points and lines in the mathematical sense are attracted to an attractor but never actually reach it, individuals and groups may be drawn to a virtual being or avatar, but will never fully become it. The existence of the virtual being or avatar is purely virtual, and serves as a goal or ideal towards which individuals and groups may strive.
