Amazon Echo is a line of smart speakers developed by Amazon. The devices connect to the voice-controlled intelligent personal assistant service Alexa, which responds to the name “Alexa.” The device is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, and providing weather, traffic, and other real-time information. It can also control several smart devices using itself as a home automation hub.

The device is activated by a wake word, either “Alexa” or “Echo” and can respond to voice commands for a variety of tasks, such as playing music, controlling smart home devices, providing information, setting alarms, and more. The device can also be connected to other smart devices and services, such as Spotify or Nest, to expand its functionality. The Amazon Echo is available in several different models and sizes, including the Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Studio, Echo Flex, and Echo Input.

Amazon acquired Alexa Internet in 1999, which was a company that provided information on websites, and was an early provider of web traffic data. After that, in 2004, Amazon Lab126 was founded, which is a research and development subsidiary of Amazon.com. Amazon Echo was under development by Lab126 since at least 2010. In 2012, Amazon acquired Evi (software), a natural language processing software, and in 2013, the company acquired IVONA, a provider of speech synthesis. Amazon Alexa, a virtual assistant using natural language processing was announced in November 2014, along with the Echo device. The company also released Amazon Lex, a service for building conversational interfaces, to the developer community in April 2017.
