Why do Twitter bots exist?

I have a Twitter bot at @twitbotix which monitors Twitter for everything about Twitter bots, and have tried to aggregate some of the best articles about Twitter Bots of all kinds, on Scoop.it. Most basically, Twitter bots are a form of automation, which like anything else may be used for good, bad, or no reason at all. There are many different kinds of Twitter bots, or Twitter automation, with commonly annoying follow bots not the only kind. Wikipedia’s definition of Twitterbot is as good as any. There is a new online forum at botforum.net dedicated to Twitter bots, particularly in the humanities, such as art and literature.
