The European Union (EU) is urging tech giants like Google, Facebook, and TikTok to identify and label deepfakes and AI-generated disinformation, or face multi-million dollar fines. The companies have until August 25 to comply. This move comes under the EU’s Digital Services Act, a law aiming to increase the transparency of online content moderation. Platforms using AI chatbots for customer service will also need to disclose to users that they are interacting with AI rather than a human. While Microsoft and Google are in a race to develop AI chatbots, the EU is concerned about the lack of safeguards against disinformation generated by AI. Twitter recently decided to leave the EU’s voluntary Code of Practice against disinformation, but the EU’s disinformation requirements will still be applied to all platforms by the designated date.
