Canadian food franchise **Freshii** has announced its plans to remove its virtual cashier named “Percy” from its stores due to public backlash and criticism. Percy, a video-calling device attached to cash registers, allowed customers to interact with remote cashiers located in Central America, who were paid as little as $3.75 per hour. Freshii faced criticism after an investigation revealed the outsourcing of cashier work to these remote employees. The decision to remove Percy comes after Freshii was acquired by Foodtastic, the Canadian company that owns several restaurant chains. The new owners prefer more personalized customer service and plan to return to traditional over-the-counter service, and they are also exploring the use of self-service kiosks.
