Museums highlighting racial violence and antisemitism are incorporating holograms, AI, and virtual reality to enable visitors to engage in simulated interactions with Holocaust survivors and enslaved individuals. This tech-driven approach aims to combat bigotry. However, there are growing concerns about AI perpetuating racism by amplifying biased human-generated online content.

At the **Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center**, visitors can ask questions to holograms of Holocaust survivors. An AI system formulates answers, and over time, the system becomes more knowledgeable with each query. In contrast, **Alabama’s Legacy Museum**, situated where enslaved people were once sold, displays holograms of actors representing enslaved individuals. These holograms, based on real testimonies, become active when visitors approach a replicated holding cell, but they do not respond to questions. The goal of these initiatives is to provide a deeper, more immersive understanding of history.

Another museum, the **Greenwood Rising History Center**, focuses on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, and features holographic barbers. These holograms simulate a haircut while discussing the era’s politics and racism. The experience further immerses visitors with the addition of smoke, symbolizing the riot taking place outside.

The Illinois museum recently introduced three new VR films that merge historic photos with present-day VR footage, allowing survivors to narrate their tales. One film, “Letters from Drancy,” will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
