Notes:
This text appears to be discussing various applications of virtual human systems, which are designed to simulate humanlike characters that can think, act, and express themselves both verbally and non-verbally. These systems are used in a variety of contexts, including aircraft cockpit evaluations, virtual reality exposure therapy, negotiation simulations, and social cooperation. Virtual human systems can be designed to provide real-time feedback to users and to operate in a hybrid virtual-physical space. They may be integrated with advanced tools for modeling nonverbal behaviors and generating procedural content. Challenges in creating successful virtual human systems include addressing variability in human nonverbal behaviors and developing systems that can effectively prepare learners for stressful interpersonal experiences. Some virtual human systems are being used to study the effects of culture and emotion on human-computer interaction. The text also mentions research on virtual humans in the creative arts, with a focus on disability, therapy, health, and rehabilitation.
There are a variety of tools that can be used to model nonverbal behaviors in virtual human systems. These tools can be used to create a more realistic and believable virtual human, and can help improve the user’s experience. Some examples of tools that can be used to model nonverbal behaviors include:
- Motion capture technology: This allows you to record and analyze real-life human movements and use them to animate a virtual human.
- Facial expression recognition software: This can be used to analyze and replicate a person’s facial expressions in a virtual human.
- Gesture recognition software: This can be used to analyze and replicate a person’s hand gestures and body language in a virtual human.
- Speech recognition software: This can be used to analyze and replicate a person’s vocal inflections and tone in a virtual human.
- Eye gaze tracking software: This can be used to analyze and replicate a person’s eye movements in a virtual human.
Procedural content generation in virtual humans refers to the automatic creation of content, such as dialogue or behaviors, by a computer program. This can be done through a variety of techniques, including the use of algorithms, machine learning models, or predefined rules. For example, a virtual human system may use a machine learning model trained on a dataset of human dialogue to generate responses that are similar to those a human might give. Alternatively, the system may use predefined rules to generate responses based on the context of the conversation and the virtual human’s characteristics.
Hybrid virtual-physical space refers to a combination of virtual and physical elements in a shared environment. In the context of virtual humans, this refers to a system in which virtual human characters are integrated into a physical space, allowing for a sense of shared presence and co-location with the user. This can be achieved through the use of various technologies, such as augmented reality, virtual reality, or robotics, to create a seamless blend of virtual and physical elements in a single environment. Hybrid virtual-physical space can be used to create immersive and interactive experiences with virtual humans, allowing users to interact with them as if they were physically present in the same location. It can also be used to provide realistic and lifelike movements and behaviors for virtual human characters, enhancing their believability and improving the overall user experience.
