How can NLP make sense of exophora?

The classic argument of roboticists is that true intelligence cannot be achieved without embodiment, in other words full sensory input, both present and past.  In artificial intelligence, this is generally achieved, or simulated, with “common sense” knowledgebases, or ontologies, such as Cyc.  In the networked world, this is being attempted with Linked data on the Semantic Web.  In short, semantification may be beyond the purview of natural language processing, strictly speaking.
