**The doctor will simulate you now**
A government video promoting the use of artificial intelligence in the NHS appears to feature several enthusiastic employees. However, none of these faces belong to a real staff member.
The Department of Health will launch the video campaign today, using lifelike â??spokesmenâ? who are generated entirely by technology. The minute-long video states: â??The voices you are hearing and the people you see are not real.â?
They are created by AI computer programs that have learnt, through viewing thousands of humans, how to create convincing faces, bodies and clothing. Text at the start of the dystopian video, which will be promoted by official government social media accounts, states: â??The wording and presenters found in this video were created using artificial intelligence.â?
Overall, the video contains four digital humans: three men and one woman of different races and ages. They are indistinguishable from real people â?? the only giveaway is that the men all speak with the same Scottish accent.
It has been created by the government to promote â??cutting-edge AI technologyâ? that is being introduced to â??revolutionise the health and care system, making it fit for the futureâ?. This is being funded through the AI in Health and Care Awards, an NHS initiative that receives £123 million in funding to accelerate the use of AI to help patients.
