Nike collaborated with production studio Final Frontier to create 3D digital representations of people, or ‘Athletars’, to provide a new experience for its shoppers on the Chinese e-commerce platform, Tmall. The goal was to create a scalable system that could accommodate different Nike outfits and adapt to different character types and personalities. The avatars were created using three types of software, which allowed for transferability of the assets. The avatars fell into four initial categories: running, street, dance, and Chinese New Year. As part of the gamification, customers could customize their avatars directly on Tmall. Nike also created physical collectibles based on the avatars, which were sent as gifts with purchases. The result of the avatar project saw a 475% increase in member signups and a 75% uplift in engagement versus previous digital activations.
