Researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine are investigating potential bias in health care chatbots. Their study, funded by the Greenwall Foundation, aims to assess how the appearance and design of chatbot avatars might influence patient interaction and trust. The research has raised ethical questions about potential manipulation of patients and the reinforcement of social stereotypes. For instance, a chatbot avatar’s perceived race or gender might affect a patient’s willingness to share information or follow health care recommendations. The team has urged the medical community to scrutinize the design of these chatbots in order to promote health equity and patient trust.
