Meshcapade, an AI startup specializing in modeling, analysis, and synthesis of 3D digital humans in motion, has announced a $6M seed funding round. The round was led by Matrix and included participation from notable tech founders and investors, including Nate Mitchell, Matthew Ball, William O’Farrell, Andrew Hamel, Gary Bradski, and 3D clothing software provider CLO. Diana Kimball Berlin of Matrix will join Meshcapade’s board.
The company seeks to make technology more human by building the “digital human layer” of the internet. Meshcapade’s SMPL body model facilitates the creation of high-accuracy digital humans across various verticals. It allows users to convert images, videos, 3D scans, motion capture data, text, and measurements into 3D digital humans, aiming to become the best foundation for the analysis and synthesis of 3D human motion and appearance.
Meshcapade’s instant-avatar solution can generate a precise 3D model of a person’s body shape and pose from an image or video. The company’s products are powered by the SMPL Standard family of models, trained on over one million 3D and 4D body scans, making them accurate and compatible with all game engines.
Since 2018, Meshcapade has supplied its 3D human technology to over 100 customers, including six of the top ten NASDAQ companies, academic research labs, and many startups.
The seed funding round is Meshcapade’s first institutional funding and will accelerate its development of 3D digital human foundation across industries. The company is headquartered in Tübingen, Germany, a hub for AI research and innovation. The founders, Naureen Mahmood, Talha Zaman, and Michael J. Black, have deep roots in AI and 3D human shape and motion technology.
