**DOB Studio’s Deepfake Technology Brings Fallen Lieutenant Park In-Cheol to Life**
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) deepfake technology is receiving attention as it was used to recreate Lieutenant Park In-cheol, who died on duty 16 years ago. The Korean Ministry of Defense released a video on July 5th titled ‘That day, military stories – meeting Lieutenant Park In-cheol.’ The video features Lieutenant Park, who lost his life during a KF-16 interceptor training accident over the West Sea in July 2007.
In the video, Lieutenant Park appears as if he’s alive and greets his mother, Lee Jun-seon, saying, “Mom, I missed you.”
The AI start-up that made this reality possible is DOB Studio, a company that develops virtual face graphics technology and focuses on virtual human content business. DOB Studio creates virtual humans by superimposing AI-generated images on body doubles. This method is quicker than traditional methods of creating virtual humans using visual special effects (VFX).
DOB Studio has previously recreated the 20-year-old version of actress Yoon Yeo-jung for an insurance commercial and recreated the live stage of the late leader of the group Ulala Session, Lim Yoon-taek, for the ‘Alive’ content. The studio has also been recognized, winning the ‘2022 New Demir Content Award.’
The technologies used to restore the appearance and voice of Lieutenant Park were virtual face editing technology that restored the young look of Yoon, and voice AI technology from a specialist company called Humelo.
DOB Studio has been working to diversify content, unveiling virtual YouTubers like Louis and Aila. Their virtual humans are designed to focus on ‘play,’ differing from other companies aiming for advertising revenue or entertainment business through virtual humans.
Following the cases of Lim Yoon-taek and Lieutenant Park In-cheol, DOB Studio expects a change in the culture of remembrance. They believe that as the experience of feeling and remembering the deceased more vividly spreads, the way we remember and memorialize may also change.
After meeting her son restored by AI, Lee said, “It was really good because it felt like I was looking at In-cheol when he was alive. It’s unfortunate and regrettable that he left my side so quickly, but I’m glad I was able to tell him I love him. I would like it if people remember him as a wonderful young man and a great soldier.”
