**Ang Seah’s Digital Domain: Revolutionizing Film Industry with Virtual Humans and Future Plans Amidst Financial Challenges**
“Ready Player One” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” both from Digital Domain, are nominated for this year’s Academy Award for Best Visual Effects under the guidance of Ang Seah. At 35, Ang Seah has risen from an average Taichung citizen to become a global innovator, transforming Digital Domain into a major international enterprise.
However, Ang Seah faced obstacles last year when Digital Domain’s stock price dropped from 0.13 HKD in July to 0.09 HKD in January. When Ang Seah recruited Cher Wang from HTC to Digital Domain in 2015, the stock price reached a record high of 3.03 HKD. Some financial experts believe that Digital Domain is following HTC’s path – big dreams, but hard to see benefits in the short term.
Ang Seah admits the impact of the U.S.-China trade war has been significant. Despite being an American company, Digital Domain is often seen as Chinese-funded due to its listing in Hong Kong. Seah stresses they also have investment from American and Japanese companies.
The company’s virtual human technology, divided into three categories: Living (copying human actions), Legend (reviving deceased people), and Creation (creating non-existent people) is seen as revolutionary in the industry. Ang Seah plans to establish a “virtual human agency” that would allow virtual humans to replace real actors when they are too busy.
With its controversial Creation technology, Seah plans to replace young but unskilled actors in mainland China’s film industry, which often contributes to a large part of the production costs. Digital Domain is also developing an advanced technology that can replicate facial expressions on others using a smartphone, potentially revolutionizing social media operations.
Seah plans to double the capital expenditure in Taiwan from 2019 and expand recruitment for machine learning specialists and engineers. He envisions Taiwan as Digital Domain’s future global base for machine learning.
