The teen rom-com “Prom Pact” on Disney platforms recently faced criticism when a clip surfaced showing noticeably unrealistic digital humans placed alongside real actors. This digital addition sparked controversy, particularly amidst the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood. One of the main concerns of the strike is the potential for studios to recreate an actor’s likeness digitally without appropriate consent and compensation. Background actors, in particular, fear their roles might be minimized if studios opt for digital replicas. Although using digital crowds in film and TV isn’t new, the distinctiveness of the digital extras in “Prom Pact” made them discernible. In response to such concerns, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) proposed that actors must provide written consent before their digital likeness can be used.
