What is the difference between natural language processing (NLP) and natural language understanding (NLU)?

Natural language processing is the more general umbrella term, which includes the subfield of Natural language understanding.  More specifically, NLU deals with machine reading, or Reading comprehension, which is marked by the ability to make Inferences.
