Ontology Engineering & Dialog Systems

Ontology Engineering

Notes:

Ontology has attracted much attention recently. Ontologies are formal, explicit specifications of shared conceptualizations. Ontologies are like a semantic version of world wide web, but found in knowledge-based systems. Ontology as well as ontological engineering is not well-understood by people. Ontological engineering can be used to organize learning/instructional theories and build a theory-aware authoring system. Ontological engineering may be used for context and adaptivity in pervasive computing environments. Efficient ontological engineering involves the use of shared lexical resources. Knowledge representation is a requirement for ontological engineering. Reverse engineering a domain ontology is one way to uncover fundamental ontological distinctions. A pattern based method can be used for re-engineering non-ontological resources into ontologies. Helix-spindle is one model used for ontological engineering. KAON (KAON2) is a software system project in support of the whole lifecycle of ontological engineering.

Ontologies are a means of representing knowledge and reason across a variety of domains. For instance, ontological support may be used for consistency checking of engineering design workflows. In the Life Sciences, terminological resources may be reused for efficient ontological engineering. In infrastructure management, ontological engineering may be used for integrating CAD and GIS. Ontological engineering is useful for interpreting geospatial queries. Infrastructure managers rely on capabilities of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) for making decisions during the implementation of engineering tasks. Ontological engineering is also used in air traffic control. Knowledge and ontological engineering techniques are used for developing knowledge-based situation analysis support systems. Adopting a knowledge-centric view of situation analysis and information fusion requires that one cares about knowledge engineering (KE) and ontological engineering (OE) techniques. Ontological theory for ontological engineering is also useful in biomedical systems information integration. Ontological engineering can be applied to the Customs domain, a very complex business domain in terms of concepts, processes and rules. Ontological engineering enables knowledge sharing within e-Government back-office. Ontological semantic technology can be used for detecting insider threats, as well as for social engineering. Goal-driven ontological engineering has been applied to threat evaluation and weapon assignment. An ontological framework founded on business model thinking aids the design and engineering of innovative mobile data services.
