Notes:
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) are computer-based systems that are designed to provide personalized, interactive instruction and feedback to learners. ITSs are often used in education to supplement or augment traditional teaching methods, and they can be applied in a variety of contexts, including schools, universities, and online learning platforms.
There are several key components that are typically found in an ITS:
- Knowledge base: An ITS typically includes a knowledge base that contains information about the subject matter being taught, as well as information about the learning goals, objectives, and strategies for the course or program.
- Student model: An ITS maintains a student model that tracks the student’s progress and performance, as well as their individual learning style and preferences. The student model is used to provide personalized feedback and guidance to the student.
- Tutoring module: The tutoring module is the core component of the ITS, and it is responsible for delivering instruction and feedback to the student. The tutoring module may use a variety of techniques, such as multimedia presentations, interactive exercises, and simulations, to engage the student and help them learn.
- Evaluation module: The evaluation module is responsible for assessing the student’s progress and performance, and it may use a variety of techniques, such as quizzes, tests, and assessments, to measure the student’s knowledge and skills.
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) and pedagogical agents are both types of educational technology that are designed to provide personalized, interactive instruction and feedback to learners. However, there are some key differences between these two types of systems:
- ITSs: ITSs are computer-based systems that are designed to provide personalized instruction and feedback to learners. They typically include a knowledge base, student model, tutoring module, and evaluation module, and they use a variety of techniques, such as multimedia presentations, interactive exercises, and simulations, to engage and educate learners. ITSs are often used to supplement or augment traditional teaching methods, and they can be applied in a variety of educational contexts, including schools, universities, and online learning platforms.
- Pedagogical agents: Pedagogical agents are computer-based agents that are designed to act as virtual tutors or teachers. They may be represented as characters or avatars, and they are typically designed to engage learners through dialogue and interaction. Pedagogical agents may use a variety of techniques, such as natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI), to understand and respond to learner inputs. Pedagogical agents are often used in e-learning environments, and they can be applied to a wide range of subject areas and learning goals.
