How good are expert systems at teaching?

This kind of system is generally referred to as Intelligent tutoring system or Pedagogical agent.

As far as I know, classical expert systems attempted to encapsulate existing human knowledge, and were not able to formalize new knowledge.  I can only assume that the motivation behind the original expert systems was to enable less knowledgeable people to benefit from the experience of those who came before, for instance in on the job training.
