Why is Google Voice’s speech-to-text engine so lousy?

As compared with what?  Do you mean why is it so free?  I’d love to know what better (free) Web Speech API than Google is available?  One fact is that most modern mobile audio input hardware is better quality than olderPC audio input hardware.

Edit: IMHO, all Google speech products are poorly named and poorly packaged, creating confusion.
