A digital avatar named Elizabeth, designed by Northwestern University students, introduced itself during a panel discussion on AI at the Chicago Innovation’s “AI vs. IQ” event. The avatar is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and was created through the collaboration of different student teams working on aspects such as text-to-speech, avatar design, and speech-to-text conversion. The students are advised by Kristian Hammond, the Bill and Cathy Osborn Professor of Computer Science. The team is currently preparing Elizabeth for a future improv show at the Annoyance Theatre & Bar in Chicago. The project is still in progress, with students using prompt engineering techniques to refine the avatar’s responses.
