At WWDC 2023, Apple unveiled its Vision Pro headset, which allows users to create hyperrealistic digital avatars for use in FaceTime calls. This technology employs an advanced neural network trained on a vast, diverse dataset to scan users’ faces, aiming to offer a virtual representation that accurately mirrors the user’s real appearance. The digital persona can track face and hand movements during calls. However, the effectiveness of this feature outside of a controlled environment remains to be seen. The $3,499 headset, which runs on Apple’s new mixed reality operating system, visionOS, is set to be released early next year.
