The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM) has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) avatar named Illariy that will teach micro-classes in Quechua, the native language of the Inca civilization, on TikTok. Illariy, whose name means “dawn” in Quechua, was developed as part of an effort to preserve indigenous languages. She is unique among AI avatars as she is currently the only one that can speak an indigenous language. Initially created as a newscaster for the university’s weekly news, Illariy will also teach the Quechua language in a new program on TikTok called “Kuska Yachay” (Let’s Learn Together). The avatar was created using AI tools including DALL-E, Midjourney, and DI-D, along with traditional design software. In the future, the team hopes that Illariy will function as a conversational bot that can answer questions in Quechua.
