During a unique Lutheran church service in Bavaria, the AI chatbot ChatGPT led a sermon through four different avatars – two young women and two young men – displayed on a large screen. The avatars, which delivered the service’s prayers, music, and sermon created by the chatbot and theologian Jonas Simmerlein, were the primary medium of communication between the AI and the over 300-person congregation. Some attendees found humor in the AI-generated avatars’ platitudes, while others critiqued the lack of emotional depth and body language. The experimental use of avatars underscored both the potential and limitations of AI in religious contexts – the inability to interact and respond in real-time to the congregation like a human pastor would being a significant drawback.
