**LinkedIn** has developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) image detector that can identify 99.6% of fake profile images, with a false-positive rate of only 1%. The system has been designed to combat the issue of fake LinkedIn profiles, a practice that has been increasingly utilized for various reasons, including enhancing the perceived trustworthiness of websites. The ability to create AI-generated profile images has further contributed to this issue. In the first half of 2022 alone, LinkedIn detected and removed 21 million fake accounts. The platform has improved its ability to spot fake accounts by identifying “artifacts” or structural differences characteristic of AI-generated images. In comparison to real images, AI-generated images tend to have highly similar areas, particularly around the eyes and nose.
