**Chinese Startup Deemos Aims to Revolutionize Digital Human Creation with Ultra-High Resolution Facial Scanning, Eyes Japan Market Expansion **

In China, various start-ups are emerging to handle virtual characters and digital humans, which are increasingly being used in places like bank terminals, news casting, live streaming, e-commerce, and commercials. A company called Deemos Technology, or Deemos, specializes in creating highly realistic digital humans through accurate facial scanning.

Deemos was founded in 2020, originating from an incubation program at Shanghai University of Science and Technology. The founding members developed a facial scanning system called “Plenoptic Stage,” which can capture every detail of a face down to the pores at the micrometer level, for which they secured intellectual property rights.

The Plenoptic Stage system is capable of executing ultra-high precision and high-speed dynamic scans, and capturing the movement of muscles during facial expressions. The images outputted by the system can reach an ultra-high resolution of 16K, with such quality that even if viewed in a cinema, audiences might mistake the CG for real people. The system was used in the production of a popular Chinese movie, “The Wandering Earth 2.”

In an example of the system’s application, Deemos scanned the face of its own CTO, creating a digital replica which can speak with realistic expressions. The reproduction is so real that it appears not to be a virtual human, even when examined closely.

Even in Japan, similar camera-equipped scanning systems are being developed and operated. Mr. Cao Ruixiang, the head of Deemos’ hardware business, told 36Kr Japan that the company can provide next-generation level image quality. Although manual adjustments are necessary after shooting, the company is also skilled in using automatic software to reduce manual work. They are confident in the speed of their process, stating that data can be provided the day after arriving at their studios in Shanghai, Beijing, or Qingdao.

Despite the impressive quality of their technology, Deemos understands that there is not an ongoing, massive demand in China for such high-spec output. Therefore, they are providing a more compact service aimed at playback on general information devices. The company has many customers from the e-commerce, finance, and advertising sectors, and the digital humans they create are being used in live commerce and other fields.

Currently, Deemos is showing strong interest in expanding into the Japanese market. They are looking for partner companies in Japan, and hope to promote the use of their filming system in the Japanese market. They believe they can provide a more natural service to the Japanese audience due to their extensive experience in creating East Asian digital human faces.

Deemos is also looking to create unique use cases in Japan, given the country’s historical strength in digital content creation. They aim to form partnerships with Japanese companies that are strong in content creation, such as gaming and film production, and hope to learn from Japan’s unique applications of their system.

As part of their early service deployment in Japan, Mr. Cao stated that they plan to offer their services at a much lower price than their global competitors.
