**Art and Technology: AI-Powered Performances Illuminate China’s Grand Evening**

In 1905, China produced its first domestically made film, “Ding Jun Shan,” premiering in Beijing at the Fengtai Photographic Studio, marking the end of an era where China didn’t have its own cinema. Over a century later, on August 28, 2023, at the “Chu Xin” Hall of the People’s Daily New Media Building, a rendition of “New Ding Jun Shan” was performed, featuring a cross-dimensional collaboration between students from the China Traditional Opera Academy and a digital persona, “Mu Lan”. The performance, blending traditional Peking Opera with modern lighting and new digital technology, garnered applause from the audience.

The event was part of the inaugural AI Evening, hosted by People’s Net, showcasing advanced accomplishments in AI through various tech-infused and futuristic artistic performances. All the evening’s programs were predominantly AI-led, with certain aspects, like invitations and posters, crafted collaboratively by humans and AI, highlighting the seamless blend of technology and humanities.

The event also featured the digital dance performance “Ling Jing · Zhi Ci Qing Lu”, adapted from a dance drama produced by the Forbidden City Museum, People’s Net, and China Oriental Performing Arts Group. This marked the drama’s first tech-enabled screening, using technology to convey the beauty of traditional Chinese culture.

Another highlight was the debut of “Bai Ze,” a digital image intended for content safety, developed in collaboration between the National Key Laboratory for Content Cognition and People’s Daily, which showcased a cross-temporal conversation.

Virtual idol, Lu Xiao Xi LUCY, the first “album-level” AI singer, mesmerized the audience with her unique voice, while virtual singer Chen Shui Ruo showcased traditional cultural charm with her song “Feng Xue Qian Qian,” utilizing technologies that made her voice indistinguishably human. In the sports segment, a “Chinese 3-on-3 Basketball Super League – Metaverse Dunk Contest” was presented with Intel’s technological support, offering a visual spectacle that merged virtual and real worlds.

Various other programs included a portrayal of the “Dream of the Red Mansion” with a high-fidelity virtual character Lin Jia Yi, a viewing of the historic “Yuan Ming Yuan” park using cutting-edge 720° VR 8K technology, and a “Mech Master Super Showdown” presented by a student team from Northeastern University, demonstrating a blend of tech applications from machine vision to human-machine interaction.

The evening also integrated other technologically advanced displays, such as the panda robot from the Chengdu Universiade closing ceremony, virtual digital human guides from Zhong Ke Shen Zhi, and drone performances.
