China’s cyberspace regulator, the **Cyberspace Administration of China** (CAC), has received 110 applications from Chinese tech companies, including Huawei and Alibaba, seeking approvals for models that can manipulate visual and audio data. These companies aim to comply with CAC’s rules from December regarding the use of deepfake technology. This procedure is distinct from CAC’s regulation of generative AI products, a segment that grew in demand after OpenAI’s ChatGPT’s success. Recently, five Chinese tech firms, including Baidu Inc and SenseTime Group, introduced AI chatbots to the public after securing government approval. Unlike chatbots that generate new content based on user prompts, deepfakes utilize AI to produce visual and audio data nearly identical to the original, making them potential tools for manipulation or misinformation.
