**”Hardly Working,” an artwork by the artist collective Total Refusal**, scrutinizes the repetitive roles of non-playable characters (NPCs) in video games, likening them to the endless tasks of Sisyphus from Greek mythology. The project, particularly centered on the NPCs in “Red Dead Redemption 2,” reveals their constant, yet unnoticed labor that adds authenticity to game environments. This emphasis aims to critique the representation of marginalized workers in capitalist structures. Total Refusal describes themselves as a “pseudo-Marxist media guerilla.” They critically engage with mainstream video games to expose their underlying political narratives. The film, co-produced with Kunsthaus Graz and supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe Culture Programme, encourages viewers to reflect on their roles in societal structures, pondering if they are akin to NPCs in their own lives.
