Notes:
A consortium of laboratories worked on this initiative, led by SRI, a project called CALO Project. As part of the CALO project, the system CALO-MA (CALO Meeting Assistant) was designed to assist meeting participants. The CALO project involved an annual test designed to measure the effects of learning on performance. The evaluations were conducted in Years 2, 3, and 4 of the CALO project, and gave some insights into PTIME’s performance and value but yielded insufficient data to evaluate the usefulness of PTIME’s adaptive capabilities. The Personalized Time Manager (PTIME) assistant is a CALO component with the goal of managing an individual’s temporal commitments over an extended period of time, while recognizing and adapting to the differences between individuals. PTIME was part of the CALO project (Cognitive Agent that Learns and Organizes), a large-scale, five-year effort to build an adaptive cognitive assistant situated in the office environment.
CALO provided the TOWEL interface to enter and manage To-Do entries. CALO included an execution and monitoring system that can be invoked through a user interface called TOWEL. TOWEL allows the user to jot to-do lists, but does not take action on those to-dos. TOWEL allows the user to invoke agents to perform a task for them.
The Integrating Learning and Reasoning project was a part of the CALO project that helps computer users better organize their electronic resources. In the CALO project, the OWL ontology generated by the translator was used to integrate several diverse programming languages and reasoning modules. Despite limitations, the CALO project substantially advanced the development of user agents, also taking into account HCI issues that are essential to improve the chances of users adopting personal agents.
One participant in the CALO project was tasked to extracted user activities on a workstation and identify what activity the user is working on so the intelligent assistant could provide activity-specific information or services to the user. The CALO project management team won the DARPA Award for Excellence by a Performer in 2007. Members of the CALO project included Khang Duong and Julie Weber.
