Notes:
The structure mapping engine is a computational model for analogical reasoning that is based on the psychological theory of analogy. It was developed by Dedre Gentner and colleagues in the 1980s as a way to understand how people use analogies to solve problems and understand new concepts.
An analogy is a comparison of two things that are similar in some way. It is a way of explaining something by saying that it is similar to something else that is easier to understand. For example, “the brain is like a computer” is an analogy that compares the brain to a computer in order to explain how the brain works.
A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes something by saying that it is something else. It is a way of expressing one thing in terms of another, often to convey a meaning or emotion that might not be apparent from the literal meaning of the words. For example, “time is money” is a metaphor that compares time to money in order to convey the idea that time is valuable.
The structure mapping engine uses the principles of analogy and metaphor to compare the structure of two concepts and find similarities between them. It is designed to help people understand new concepts by linking them to familiar ones, and to solve problems by finding similarities between different situations.
